NO DEAL BREXIT. THE BENEFITS OF A STIMULATING EXPERIENCE.

The news has recently been concerned with the expected consequences of leaving the EU without any deal. Just how much disaster awaits us? A report was published over the week end (leaked, of course) which was full of gloom. It was dismissed by the government as out-of-date and failing to include the latest planning.

Boris and his supporters admit that there will be ‘bumps in the road’ .That does not worry me, because adversity usually generates a novel and innovative response. It has happened often enough in our history, and will happen again. We will find substitutes for things that seem essential – maybe even better things – or discover that we never really needed them in the first place.

Our society is at present obsessed with consumption and choice. It is often a choice between things that have very little difference between them. And we are continually urged to eat more and spend more and discard things that still work perfectly well in favour of new products that sometimes don’t work at all.

Adversity is seldom welcome, but it does have some good side effects. Looking at it from he worst point of view, war has caused medical and scientific advances that might not have happened otherwise. And we have not caused a war.  We have only (so far) resisted an intransigent European ideology. So, Good Luck Boris. I hope he will tell Macron and Merkel that we are going, and that we are going to make a success of it, and going to reap huge benefits from a no-deal Brexit.
