An Octogenarian in the modern world

Budget Day, and not much evidence that anybody – including the Chancellor of the Exchequer – really knows what to do. So the non-expert can fall back on what he thinks is common sense. How did we get into this mess? By paying ourselves too much money for doing too little work. So why not reverse the process – work a little harder and take a little less reward? Answer – because it means a cultural shift and re-balancing of expectations. Such things take time, but it would be a start to acknowledge the need.

And do our complex modern methods alter the basic conditions of trade. I have got more of X than I really need but not enough of Y. You have got more of Y than you really need but not enough of X. Then trade benefits both of us. Every schoolboy negotiaing a swap knows this. What is Britains X? Can we make more of it? Can we create another X?
