An Octogenarian in the modern world

Regarding the possible banning of religious symbols/dress, it is interesting to think what might happen if this was viewed in general terms as one instance of a prohibition on outward declarations of one’s allegiance. It might then become illegal to (inter alia) wear:

A clerical collar. A wedding ring. A daffodil on St. David’s Day (or Rose, etc.) The scrambled egg MCC colours. A Manchester United T-shirt.

Think of the enforcement problems that the Insignia Police would have. Think of the millions lawyers would make.

If such laws had been in place when I was a boy, I would not have been allowed to wear the VERMIN badge issued to Young Conservatives when Aneuran Bevan designated all Tories as Vermin. Nor could I have worn the Golliwog badge earned by regularly eating a certain make of jam.
