An Octogenarian in the modern world


A day or two ago a Bishop led a movement in the House of Lords to pass an amendment that would water down the government Welfare Reform bill. He wanted to protect non-workers with numerous children. Next thing, a past Archbishop publicly takes the other side – “We can’t go on with this absurd system”,  he says. He thinks that just handing out cash may be a short-term kindness but a bad thing in the long term. It’s a hard one. Some people, finding that life has got harder will start by groaning and grumbling but will then take positive action to help themselves. Others refuse to take that second step, or are so disadvantaged that they are not capable of it. Nobody knows beforehand which is which. But the reality of social change is that somebody always feels hard done by. It can’t be avoided
