An Octogenarian in the modern world

We are hearing a lot about Scotland possible breaking from the union, and all the time Alex Salmond is prominent. It begins to look as if the project is driven by the obsession of one man. This makes me very suspicious. Nations have often sought independence because they felt they were being exploited or had no identity. Surely neither is true here. They are fully represented at Westminster and their national identity is recognised and respected worldwide. What would they gain by wrecking a relationship that works pretty well?
