WITCHCRAFT – LONDON

I am shocked – like everyone – by the current case in London. But I write books in which my heroine uses witchcraft to eliminate evil-doers and I note a few tweets recently saying “I don’t believe in it”. In what sense is it believable or otherwise?

It is believable in the sense that some people perform arcane rituals and are seen by others as practising witchcraft.

It is real in the sense that knowing such rituals have been performed can psychologically affect a person targeted by them.

It is real in the sense that it can inspire defensive action by believers.

It is real in the sense that such activities have at times been recognised by the law. People have been prosecuted for performing the rituals or possessing physical objects associated with witchcraft.

It is not real in the sense that we can prove the rituals – and those rituals only – to have caused a certain result. Not yet, anyway.
