An Octogenarian in the modern world

The Daily Telegraph on Saturday reported substantial parts of the speech in Westminster Hall by The Pope. He made much of a distinction between Reason and Religion and of their need for each other.  I don’t think the distinction is wholly valid, because Religion originated from Reason. It is the child of reason. In every emergent society, humans sought to explain the things they were unable to understand and came up with concepts that look rather like God. And the wise men always sought to lay down rules that were for the good of the tribe. An effective way to enforce these was to identify them with the will of God. (Or whatever name they used.)  So Religion really represents the accumulation of Reason over many centuries and after the scrutiny of many great minds. What The Pope really meant was “In your adoration of a modern addition to Reason, don’t forget how Reason/religion developed and don’t ignore the wisdom it offers.”
